McCall Primary School, located on the site of the old historic Acworth School (intersection of Academy Street and Dixie Avenue), opened for classes on Wednesday, August 10th. The school, which cost about $9 million dollars and was funded through a one cent SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) approved by Cobb County voters in 2003, serves only Pre-K, Kindergarden, and 1st Graders. 2nd-5th Graders will continue to be served by Acworth Intermediate School located on Cantrell Road (off McEver Road), where the Barber Middle School is located.
Barber Middle School also opened on Wednesday. It cost $19 million and was funded through the same SPLOST. Barber will relieve overcrowding at Awtrey Middle School.
Riverside Primary in Mableton also opened on Wednesday. Austell Primary's opening has been delayed due to construction delays.
I have redesigned the Atlanta TV page to integrate better with the main design of the webpage. I have plced the listings in a table with the color scheme (white background and red font) of the old listings within the red background design of the website. When I have an avalible opprotunity, the radio pages will be redesigned with the same interface.
Cable news channel MSNBC is auctioning off stick puppets of Michael Jackson, Tom Messero, and others for a good cause. The stick puppets were a part of "Michael Jackson Puppet Theater", a parody of the day's events in the Michael Jackson Trial that airs during "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" weeknights at 8:00 PM and midnight ET. The figures were used in the very first installment, which aired in February when Michael Jackson showed up late to court in his pajamas.
Bidding started at 9:00 PM ET Monday, with the starting bid at $0.05. The bid was up to $10,000 fifteen minutes after the auction began. The bidding closes Friday at 9:00 PM ET.
Danielle Reese, who had been a reporter for WAGA/Fox 5 for shortly under a year, a Fox owned and operated station, has quit after she was abandoned by a photographer at a Waffle House, under orders of the news director on duty.
Reese, who is pregnant, had a doctor's note stating that she is not to work more than eight hours a day. Reese and her photographer were returning from a news story 40 miles from the studio, when the news desk ordered the crew to return. Reese refused, and the news desk ordered the photographer to drop her off and return to the story. Reese then called a taxi. When she returned to the studio, she returned her cell phone, cleaned out her desk and quit.
Alternative rock station 96.7 the Buzz (WBZY-FM) has moved up the dial to 105.3 effective as of noon today. The station started three years ago in an effort to compete with Susquehanna's 99X (WNNX). Unfortunantly, the signal of 96.7 is only 2.15kW Class A, and has a range of about 25-30 miles, so the station never got off of the ground.
The music mix of the Buzz is apparently changing along with the frequency, now going after the 21-34 male audience. The station is without DJ's at this time, but it is not know if the DJ's who were at 96.7 will stay on board, nor if "Loveline" will remain on the station.
As for 96.7, it now has the WVWA callsign, and on Monday 5/16 will become a simulcast of spanish contemporary Viva 105.7 (WWVA-FM), which moved up from the Buzz's new home of 105.3.
At this time it is not known what is happening to WHEL-FM 105.1 Helen, which was simulcasting Viva. It is expected to return to a simulcast of WGST 640 AM, but might remain a simulcast of Viva.
For fans of the low-powered 96.7 the Buzz (WBZY-FM), I am the bearer of what appears to be the bad news.
Although unconfirmed at this time, 96.7 the Buzz appears to be the second CC station in a week to flip formats. It appears that it will be a simulcast of spanish-language Viva 105.7, which moved up from 105.3 on Monday. This information is based on FCC call letter change activity. Here is the breakdown:
- 105.7, former WLCL (Cool), now bears the WWVA-FM callsign (Viva)
- 105.3, former WWVA-FM, now temporarily bears the WLCL callsign. The new format for 105.3 has not yet been announced, and the callsign will most likely change again when the new format launches
- 105.1 Helen, former WVWA (Viva simulcast), returns to it's original WHEL callsign. It is expected that the WGST simulcast will return to this frequency.
- 96.7, former WBZY-FM, now bears the WVWA callsign
- WBZY-FM callsign no longer in use
Again, it is not confirmed by anyone at this time, but the callsign activity appears to speak for itself.
